GCARC It is also Podcast at The Harry Wolf Radio Show - It will be re-broadcast on January 6, 2009. Please check out the podcast, and list it in Up Front in QST Our aim is to promote Amateur Radio to the public. Harry Wolf KC2THV harrywolfshow.com Some SNJ EmComm notes from Gary Wilson, K2GW, SNJ Section Emergency Coordinator: 1. For all disasters outside our section, check the main page of the ARRL web site for response instructions. No one is to ever self-deploy to other sections or regions. Typically, K2DCD at ARRL HQ now acts as the ARRL Incident Commander to coordinate deployment to such events. Once a call for outside ham volunteers is initiated by league officials in the disaster area, those wishing to go should contact their ARRL County Emergency Coordinator to forward their desire to be considered for such remote assignments. SNJ County EC's are listed at www.snjares.org. Hams wishing to deploy need to be in good physical condition and to be able to be self-sufficient in extended conditions of high heat, humidity and lack of electrical power. They should be able to bring at least a weeks work of food and camping equipment, in addition to portable power sources, amateur radio equipment and portable antennas Obviously, prior training and experience in formal message handling and emergency communications is needed as well. No reimbursement for any expenses is planned. Please indicate how many weeks you can be deployed. The EC will forward your information up through the SEC to ARRL HQ for consideration. It definitely helps if your ARRL County EC has previously seen you serve succesfully on local events! 2. To help you get that prior local experience, we will be running a statewide Simulated Emergency Test (SET) on the morning of Saturday 4 October from 9AM until about 1 PM. Contact your ARRL County Emergency Coordinator to participate. |

SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY NEWSLETTER FOR NOVEMBER
SECTION MANAGER, JEAN PRIESTLEY, KA2YKN
"AMATEUR RADIO" is many things. It is education, fun, a life line for shut ins and a bobby that keeps on giving. It is a gift of life and a circle of protection. When you first got6 into the hobby, you probably did not fathom the ride it would take you on. If you were a kid, every contact was a new adventure to a distant state or mysterious far-away land. The trlip from that first year as a ham to today was filled with hundreds of activities, thousands of contacts and a million memories. What a great gift for another young person it would be to have the ability to go countries across the oceans and as far north and south as the airwaves travel.
It is with deep regret that Old Barney reports that Tom Maciaszek, KB2ZWY, a former member of Old Barney, passed away in October 2008. Tom was a graduate of one of the early Ham Radio Classes and was quite excited when he got his license. He was employed at WOBM/AM in Toms River and he will be missed by his family and friends. Rest in Peace.
For those of you who knew Harry Wolf, Harry was killed in an auto accident on his way home from a club meeting. He called Somerdale his home where he lived with his wife, Debra and children Marissa and Andrew. He was brother to Donna and Michael. Harry was the former owner of Raymond Jewelers in Collingswood and the proud creator of the Harry Wolf Show on WNJC radio and was an active member of TARP. Harry had just filled in with an SJRA program by creating his BATTLE OF TRIVIA BETWEEN TWO HAM RADIO CLUBS, SJRA AND GCARC. Harry was one of a kind and will be missed

"CITY AT SEA TOUR" The intent is to highlight the support activities within the vessel, such as dental, medical and sickbay. There will also be a Quick Stop (aka smoke shop), Post office and machine shops. Of interest to the Ham community is the WW2 Radio Room that members of BNJARS have been working on. This compartment was once filled with black crackle painted equipment that glows in the dark. The gang has found the appropriate equipment from various sources, restored and repaired each item as needed. On May 19, 2008, the new General Quarters Tour opened. The tour will offer the same tour as the current, except all guests will receive an audio device that will include narration, music, special effects, descriptions of spaces and recorded accounts by former crew members. An adult and child's version will be available. The ships current guided tour The Fire Power Tour will now include the Combat Engagement Center and the Admiral Halsey Stateroom. Even If your have seen the ship once already, there are plenty of new reasons to come see it again.
