Hot Springs ARC News
HSARC News We had a number of folks join in the transmitter hunt in October. After 2 rounds of hunting, we had a delicious potluck meal at the shack. Kelley, KDØDLB and Lon, WSØV were great foxes. Phil, KAØFUI, has his tower and antennas up and ready for winter. It makes a pretty impressive sight. Phil and Tim, KØOR, worked on getting the feedlines and rotor cables installed at the club shack. Gary, NØSXX, and Tim operated CW Sweepstakes from the club shack using the club call, KØHS. Thanks to Gary for bringing his computer over. We will be operating SSB Sweepstakes from the club shack in November. Listen for KØHS if you need South Dakota. If you're in the area, stop by and have some snacks. A Technician licensing class is in the planning stages. We will be getting started around the middle of November. Some of the new Techs are meeting at the club shack on Sunday afternoons to study for their General test. It is great to see the club building getting lots of use. What a great club to belong to! 73 Tim KØOR

Northern Hills Amateur Radio Club
The October meeting of the Northern Hills Amateur Radio Club was called to order by President Gene McPherson, NØMHJ at 19:40 on October 24, 2008 with 5 members present at the Lawrence County Emergency Operations Center. Paul Thomson, the Lawrence County Emergency Management Director, was also present.
Paul Thomson gave the club members a walk-thru of the Emergency Operations Center and explained its security and operation. Some of the various locations in the facility were the situation and training room, the housing area, the dispatch area which included the amateur radios, the communication supply room, and the kitchen area. The amateur radios were inspected and program updating of the 2 meter radio was needed and the HF antenna needs to be inspected. The radios and their antennas will be worked on in the near future .
The minutes of the September meeting was read and approved with corrections. The Treasurer's report was read and was approved.
Gene reported on SET for the Northern Hills area. Reception problems were discussed and different locations were suggested for the placing of mobile radios for better coverage. The amateur radio locations on Terry Peak was discussed so Paul would be aware of where they were. The amateur radio facilities in the Black Hills was explained to Paul and how the repeater system worked. The South Dakota link system was also explained and how both systems can be linked.
Net Controllers for the State Link apparently have been assigned for the next several months.
Discussion of license classes and testing was discussed for the Northern Hills area. Possible classes for the ARRL Emergency Communication certification was discussed but there is a lack of certified instructors at the present time.
Gene informed everyone that he has gotten the DXCC award. The meeting was adjourned at 21:06. Next meeting will be at the Sturgis Fire Station.
