Amateur radio club aids hurricane victims
The Tahlequah Amateur Radio Club spect much of the Labor Day weekend on the air as Hurricane spent approached the Gulf of Mexico. Ham radio operators monitored established frequencies early in the event for emergency traffic. On Monday evening, KE5WBM, the club's new call sign, and members were called to action as a relay station and later, net control for the Central Gulf Coast Hurricane Net. Devan Brotherton, a long time amateur operator, checks in with the Gulf Coast Hurricane Net weekly. He offered the services of KE5WBM to the net and members were requested to assist Labor Day from 4 to 8 pm. During times of disaster, amateur radio operators often become the sole source of information between those who are affected and relatives when vital resources, such as electrical power and telephone service, are interrupted. Nets are established to relay that information to relatives, emergency personnel and others. Other Tahlequah Amateur Radio Club members who assisted with the Gulf Coast Hurricane Net were Bill Jones, Scott Pettus and Mike Underwood. TARC meets every first Saturday of the month at 9am in the Restaurant of the Cherokees. Anyone interested in amateur radio is welcome. For more information, call (918) 931-1996.
