Amateur radio club aids hurricane victims

The Tahlequah Amateur Radio Club spect much of the Labor Day weekend on the air as Hurricane spent approached the Gulf of Mexico. Ham radio operators monitored established frequencies early in the event for emergency traffic. On Monday evening, KE5WBM, the club's new call sign, and members were called to action as a relay station and later, net control for the Central Gulf Coast Hurricane Net. Devan Brotherton, a long time amateur operator, checks in with the Gulf Coast Hurricane Net weekly. He offered the services of KE5WBM to the net and members were requested to assist Labor Day from 4 to 8 pm. During times of disaster, amateur radio operators often become the sole source of information between those who are affected and relatives when vital resources, such as electrical power and telephone service, are interrupted. Nets are established to relay that information to relatives, emergency personnel and others. Other Tahlequah Amateur Radio Club members who assisted with the Gulf Coast Hurricane Net were Bill Jones, Scott Pettus and Mike Underwood. TARC meets every first Saturday of the month at 9am in the Restaurant of the Cherokees. Anyone interested in amateur radio is welcome. For more information, call (918) 931-1996.

    Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry

    Proclaims June 18- 24, 2006

Amateur Radio Week Oklahoma City, OK -- The ARRL - The National Association for Amateur Radio, and all Oklahoma amateur radio operators who are dedicated to public service were recognized this week for their service to their communities. The proclamation from Oklahoma's Governor Brad Henry proclaimed June 18 - 24, 2006, as Amateur Radio Week. Governor Henry recognized amateur radio operators' "value in public assistance by providing emergency radio communications and for these services they donate to the state." Ham radio operators typically help with communication during weather-related emergencies such as the devastating hurricanes along the Gulf coast this past year.

The highlight of amateur radio week will be "Field Day" (an emergency communications preparedness exercise), which takes place June 24-25 in locations all over the state (and thought out the nation). Field Day is an annual nationwide event that was designed to test operators' abilities to set up and operate portable stations under emergency conditions, such as the loss of electricity, during severe weather conditions, or other disasters. The event is a serious test of skill and a contest for fun, too. During the weekend, the radio operators try to contact as many other Field Day stations as possible. More than 35,000 Amateur Radio operators across the country participated in last year's event. The first Field Day was held in 1933.

"Amateur Radio is a lot of fun, and 2006 is the 100th anniversary of voice over radio," says John Thomason, WB5SYT (Oklahoma ARRL Section Manager) "In addition to our emergency communications preparedness, this years Field Day will be used to show the public the fun side of ham radio. We encourage everyone in the state to locate your local clubs Field Day operation and drop by to see what ham radio is all about. You may even get to make a few contacts while youre there.

To find your local Amateur Radio club, go to www.arrl.org click on the link to clubs and locate local clubs by state or zip code. There are 30 ARRL-affiliated clubs in Oklahoma; most will be holding Field Day activities.

Ms.Denise Bode, OK Corporation Commissioner, discusses on June 12 the role of Amateur Radio in public service and the importance of FD 2006 with OK Section Manager John Thomason-WB5SYT"
