I've always believed that the more you GIVE our hobby, the more you GET! Getting involved and contributing to ham radio is much more rewarding than sitting on the sidelines and your ARRL section organization has plenty of opportunties. Emergency Coordinators: Emergency Management in North Carolina is organized from the "bottom up",with the first response coming from local resources. That makes our local Emergency Coordinators the most important leaders in ARES. We're looking for Emergency Coordinators for the following counties: Bertie, Brunswick, Davidson, Franklin, Hyde, Montgomery, Scotland, Stokes, Union, Vance, and Washington. Net Control Operators: We run six section nets each day and there's always openings for Net Control Stations. The North Carolina Morning Net (SSB) meets on 3.927MHz at 7:45am. The North Carolina Evening Net (SSB) meets on 3.923MHz at 6:30pm and the Tarheel Emergency Net begins an hour later, at 7:30pm, on the same frequency. The Carolinas Net - Early (CW) meets on 3.573MHz at 7:00pm and the Carolinas Net - Late (CW) meets on the same frequency at 10:00pm. There are Net Manager positions also open on some of these nets. For more info, contact our Section Traffic Manager, Dave Roy, W4DNA at w4dna@nc.rr.com. Official Relay Stations: The nets mentioned above need operators to carry traffic and act as liason stations between the section and local nets as well as up to the regional nets. Official Relay Stations are experts at these duties and form the backbone of the National Traffic System. For more info, contact our Section Traffic Manager, Dave Roy, W4DNA at w4dna@nc.rr.com. LEADERSHIP CHANGES Congratulations and thanks to Susan Melvin, K4ZXN for stepping up as District Emergency Coordinator for AREA 13! Also thanks to Ben Melvis, KM4C, for replacing Susan as Cleveland County EC. We also have a new EC for Robeson County, Tom Cox, KB5WX. MEDIA HITS Seven year old Cameron Hasson, KJ4EDF, was in the spotlight this month. Cameron was featured on the "Carolina Traveler" segment on Charlotte's WCNC newscast on November 5. You can see the video at http://www.wcnc.com/traveler/vitindex.html. Cameron also appeared on ARRL's JOTA website, operating N4S in Talorsville, NC. The Cleveland County ARS had an article on their JOTA efforts on shelbyinfo.com (http://www.shelbyinfo.com/newsstory.asp?NewsID=11283). FAMILY LICENSE CLASS Eric Hasson, KJ4DLJ, had such good luck getting his 6yo son Cameron, KJ4EDF and wife Beverly, KJ4EDE licensed that he's sharing his ideas with others as part of a "Family Amateur Radio Class". The class format is designed to accomodate parents and their children and will be taught at Gaston Memorial Hospital beginning January 6. Joe Hullender, N4JAH is the featured teacher. If you'd like more info on this innovative approach - or you would like to share your own ideas - contact Eric at eric@hasson.us.
