    NOVEMBER 2008 MISSOURI SECTION NEWS

    DALE BAGLEY, KØKY MO SM

The Field Day results are on the ARRL Members Only part of their website now and it's fun to see how you or your club did in its category. If you want to check out the Scores use this link. Scores Members Only . Field Day scores are fun, but the training and practice of emergency operations we get during Field Day is vital to our service to our communities, state and nation. There is a great article on the ARRL website about the 2008 Field Day. To go to that article click on the link provided Field Day Article 2008

The ARRL Website reported on November 6, that the ARRL VEC announced that as of January 1, 2009, the fee to take an ARRL Volunteer Examiner (VE)-administered Amateur Radio license exam will increase by $1, from $14 to $15. According to ARRL VEC Manager Maria Somma, AB1FM, ARRL VE teams may retain up to $7 of this fee to directly reimburse their teams out-of-pocket examination expenses; currently, VE teams keep $6. This is the first time in four years that the examination fee has been adjusted.

November is a time of harvest and thanksgiving. I want to express my thanks to all those that have done so much to keep Amateur Radio in Missouri on the upswing. In the Kansas City area one team of amateurs has helped license over 300 new Hams during a two year period. In St. Louis and the surrounding counties there have been similar accomplishments. In SW Missouri there are many active amateur radio clubs that have done some wonderful things for their membership. Northeast MO and Northwest MO amateurs are hard at work keeping Amateur Radio growing. Most of all I want to thank all of the members of the Missouri Section Cabinet and other MO Section appointees for their outstanding efforts. I haven't given any specific names or calls because the space available is limited and there are so many I would have to list.

    2008 HAMFESTS

The South-Side Amateur Radio Club Octoberfest 2008 held October 18th at the Grandview Middle School was a really good Hamfest. Donna Quick, KB0YJN, SSARC President and the membership did a wonderful job organizing and running the Hamfest.

The Saint Louis ARC Halloween Hamfest October 25th in the Kirkwood was very well attended and there were lots of Flea Market vendors this year. Congratulations to the SLARC on another outstanding Hamfest.

Tony Fanska, KCØSJU, Secretary/Treasurer of the Northwest Missouri Hamfest Association reports that the rumor is correct. The Board of Directors of the NorthwestMissouri Hamfest Association has canceled the St. Joe Hamfest forJanuary 17, 2009. It is with much sorrow that this long runningHamfest has had to come to an end.

    AFFILIATED CLUB NEWS

    KEITH HAYE, WEØG, ACC

Keith Bower, KCØNCK Secretary/Treasurer of The Independence FM Amateur Radio Club recently announced the club meeting on November 10, 2008 (7PM). The meeting was held Salvation Army in Independence, MO. They discussed their winter of 2009 kit building project.John Watkins, NØEVH, reported that the club members will have the opportunity to build a complete transceiver for 40, 30or 20 meters and the kit complete with board and components is only 29 dollars! All members were encouraged to join in the building of the project and in the end they will have a complete QRP 1/2 watttransceiver that canput on the air.

The Callaway Amateur Radio League at their October meeting made plans to participate in the City of Fulton's 150th anniversary event. The CARL newsletter reported that Doug Heinemeier, (ex NØMGX) has passed his Extra Class License exam and is now known as ACØMS.

The Mississippi Valley DX and Contest Club newsletter the "DX HOG" included a report by ARRL QST Contributing Editor and author Ward Silver, NØAXI, on his November Sweepstakes participation. In his own words Ward states that "I had a wonderful time operating CW Sweepstakes at the fine station of Jim, WØFF and Deloris KØRRO, Glasscock this past weekend. The final total (before log checking, hi) is 1050

QSOs by 79 sections, just missing VY1. The score may hold up to be a new

MO LP record - let's hope so".

The Macon Area Repeater Council reported that a work team that included Larry Ballew, ABØHP, Steve Foltz, KCØHIW, Ed Brockelmeyer, KØEB and Charles Roberts, WBØHLW has replaced the 2 meter antenna that is part of the Missouri Emergency Packet Network. The original antenna was severely bent by a nearly 70 mph wind that passed through Macon in late summer. At that time they discovered the damage also done by a recent Lightning strike. Hopefully the packet radio system will be back on the air soon.

The St. Louis and Suburban Radio Club program for the November 14th meeting will be presented by Dr. Robert Herrmann the Otto Nuttli Professor of Geophysics at St. Louis University. Dr. Herrmann has been involved with St. Louis Universities Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences since 1975. His interests in the area of earthquake studies include: applied aspects of earthquake seismology, to include seismic hazard, high frequency ground motion, seismic wave propagation, and especially Computer Programs in Seismology. His presentation will give the membership a very good understanding of the earthquake potential in our area as related to the New Madrid Fault and more.
