(October 11, 2008)Pa Legislature Passes Proposed Amateur Radio Tower Legislation

On Tuesday October 7, 2008 at 6:18 pm the Pa House of Representatives voted to approve the pending Amateur Radio Tower Legislation. The final vote was 196 Yes to 1 No. This follows the Senate's approval of the same legislation by a vote of 49 Yes to 1 No. The votes are a testimony to the fine reputation held by Amateur Radio.

Anyone wanting a PDF copy of Senate Bill 884 it is now available at www.epa-arrl.org. On first page of that site in the lower right quadrant click on the bottom line of the announcement.

Congratulations to all everyone of you did a lot to get this passed. This is not limited to all of those who made contact with their state legislators but also to those in PA and the entire country who did so much to heighten the reputation of Amateur Radio.

Governor Rendell signed the legislation on Wednesday October 8, 2008. Now know as Act 88 will be come effective December 9, 2008.

    Thank you to all.

    73,
    Eric, WB3FPL

Lou-K3EMG (L) and Reg-N3KAS from Montco ARES-RACES' Hospital Response Team (HRT) check out the new operating positions at Pottstown Memorial Medical Center recently. Two dual-band (2M/70cm) systems were professionally installed terminating adjacent to the Doctors' Lounge next to the new ER. This allows full voice and WinLink 2000 access to all county and mutual-aid Repeaters and Nodes. Plus quick and easy access and set-up by HRT personnel when responding to a deployment. Pottstown is one more hospital in Montgomery County that has recognized the value of including amateur radio in their safety & emergency management plan.

One of 2 walls of radio consoles in the new Montgomery County (EPA) ARES-RACES Command Center recently dedicated. The facility features much larger space adjacent to the county EOC. In addition to all computers being fully networked, the radio compliment includes several V/UHF/HF Icom & Kenwood analog and digital including D*Star-ready radios. Kantronics KPC3+ and 9612+ TNCs handle WinLink and APRS functions with Astron RS-20A's providing the power. Another wall of consoles contain operating positions for ATV and APRS which are connected to overhead projectors. Plus, there will be a planned WinLink RMS Hubbing Center (formerly known as PMBO). This will be a fully hardened site complete with HF Pactor III. (Photo courtesy of Reg-N3KAS)

Reg Leister-N3KAS, Lou Ann Cahn, of Philadelphia's NBC-10 "The Investigators" and Bob Rex-K3DBD following the taping of a recent story that gained national recognition for amateur radio. As Leister, PIO for EPA stated, "We could have never paid for that kind of publicity, especially in the time slots which it ran. Plus the TV station linked the Pottstown Area ARC's website, Vloged and did a Slideshow of the segment as well!"
